WEEK 8: Baroque Period

According to my research that Baroque art, was characterized by a focus on asymmetry, mass and space.  It also uses light and color in a new, dramatic way. Art theory develops during this time, promotes ideas of order and organization as well as instinctive immediate emotions.

The work that distinguishes the Baroque period is stylistically complex, even contradictory. I think, the art expression that some artists used showed that on each figure’s face signified the emotional factor of the event, seems they wanted the audience to feel the same emotion.  Aside from that the intense of being realistic and natural with their art work would be the remarkable of all work of arts. The intensity of the emotion portrayed here is really what characterizes this Baroque form.

The Baroque is a period of artistic style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance and music.  Maybe those are the most striking characteristics of Baroque Art.
Jan Vermeer, Woman Holding a Balance, 1664
Rembrandt, Self-Portrait, 1630

According to John Rupert Martin, the Baroque artists had an “urge to expand range of sensual experience and to deepen and intensity the interpretation of feelings.”  He also said that those emotions would be sought in an artwork of some painters like Rembrandt’s self-portrait of 1630. It showed how lively and spontaneous emotions express in his portrait.” And the painting of Jan Vermeer, Woman Holding a Balance, 1664 which the scale in the woman's hand is also perfectly balanced, and the entire painting reflects the expressiveness of her. Those artworks had a great sense of realistic treatment of the subject matter. The expression of each figure’s face signifies the emotional factor of the event and seems as wanted the audience to feel the same emotion. And that would be relevant to present expression of art. Most of arts made by an artist today would really emphasize also the great sense of realistic treatment of the subject matter.

Probably the intense of being realistic and natural with their art work would be the attribute that I can use to create my artwork.

WEEK 7: The Renaissance Art

As I have read that Renaissance means “rebirth.    For me the most striking characteristics of Renaissance Art was proved to be a time of great transformation of the artist as they came to occupy the different place in the society, for art was becoming more than just a craft. Workshops were also abundant, where a master paid to take on apprentice to teach practical skills in the field.  Like other eras one thing that made them popular was their Arts. During this period most of their art was made for commissions or religious reasons.

In terms of expression in Renaissance art, it is important to remember that this was a time when art was being brought back to life. The artist expertise take their themes from classical literature" and religious sources, "and gain emotional power by representing a number of people reacting to the central event portrayed. Most of the artists uses many ancient sources and speaks of the expressive nature of art during that time. In terms of art they break down the visible world into its basic form:  line, shape, color, space and texture. An artist refines ideas that have already been formulated and lays out a guideline for painters to follow. Their expression of arts seems to understand the importance of movement in terms of expression as the artists has spent a great deal of time observing and studying the matter. According to some artists during this period said that the viewers will be moved by the clearly demonstrated feelings of the figures that are portrayed through the movements of the body. Because this expression is so important, painters must know about all movements of the body, and how to reflect the precise emotion of the figure without confusing the viewer. They believes that nature plays a great role as it is from nature that these emotions come. As I have noticed that most of today’s artist had the same way of expression of art during that period.

The Renaissance artists accurately portrayed and reflect the inner emotions and feelings of the figures and subjects of their works so I think this is the influence that I can attribute the way I create in my own designs and artworks.
